KARACHI: The brutally amputated and injured camel named ‘Kemi’ from Sanghar district of Sindh has been relocated to a shelter home in Karachi.

Kemi’s leg was amputated by a landowner, sparking widespread outrage. The incident occurred on June 14 in the Mundh Jamrao area, where the animal had wandered into an agricultural field.

According to reports, the gruesome act came to light when videos of the camel’s leg being cut went viral on social media, prompting immediate action from provincial authorities.

On Friday, the camel had entered the field in Sanghar, which had infuriated the local landowner compelling him to commit the brutal act.

After the footage went viral on social media, public outrage ensued, with many expressing their anger and demanding justice.

Videos shared by the animal rights group, CDRS Benji Project Karachi Shelter, on Sunday, show the camel being carefully transported to its new home.

In the footage, Kemi is seen with her injured leg bandaged, moaning in pain, yet eating fodder, highlighting her resilience. The heartwarming caption, “Welcome home, Kemi,” accompanies the videos from the shelter.

Following the incident, SSP Sanghar Ejaz Shaikh said that five individuals involved in the crime have been arrested with two of them confessing to the crime.

Sindh Chief Minister took notice of the incident and Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that an agreement had been reached between the accused and the camel’s owner. Despite this, a case was filed against the perpetrators on behalf of the state, signaling that such acts of cruelty would not be tolerated, he said.

In a gesture of support, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori announced the donation of two camels to the owner, condemning the inhumane treatment of Kemi.

Kemi’s journey to the Karachi shelter home marks a new beginning, where she will receive the care and compassion she deserves. An Indian national has announced to send an artificial limb for the amputated camel so that it could walk and graze again.

Critics said that the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for stronger animal protection laws and the collective responsibility to prevent such cruelty in the future.
