ISLAMABAD: The legal journey of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, entangled in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references, took a fresh turn as appeals for reinstatement were filed in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo submitted the petitions through his counsel, Amjad Pervez. Nawaz Sharif has cited his ongoing health concerns, stating, “I have not fully recovered from the illness yet.” The former PM’s health has been a point of contention throughout his legal proceedings.

The Al-Azizia reference saw a sentence passed in absentia on July 6, 2018, while Nawaz Sharif’s wife was undergoing medical treatment in London. Nawaz emphasised that his wife was on a ventilator in London during that time and had requested a delay in the pronouncement of the verdict, which was not granted. As a result, he decided to return to Pakistan, face incarceration, and file appeals against the judgments.

He asserted that he did not abuse the bail waiver, defending his position that he could not appear in court on medical grounds. His legal team submitted medical reports to the Lahore High Court (LHC) regularly to support this claim.
