Sindh govt plans major reforms for vehicle registration

KARACHI: Sindh Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control, Sharjeel Memon, has announced a forthcoming ban on unregistered vehicles across the province.

This move aims to streamline vehicle registration and enhance regulatory compliance on Sindh’s roads.

Speaking at a session of the Sindh Assembly, Minister Memon outlined the new law, which mandates car registration before vehicles leave the showroom.

Currently, car owners have a 60-day window to register their vehicles. “We will introduce this amendment in the assembly soon, and it will apply to both locally assembled and imported cars,” he stated.

Highlighting the specifics for imported vehicles, Memon noted that all such cars enter Pakistan through Karachi’s seaport. “If the car is for Karachi, it will be registered at the port. Vehicles destined for other provinces will be transported via carriers or trucks and not allowed to be driven on Sindh roads,” he explained.

The minister also addressed the long-standing practice of using “Applied For” number plates, which allows unregistered cars to operate during the 60-day registration period. “We aim to end this culture,” he asserted.
