ISLAMABAD: Taking notice of rising tuition fees, the Federal Health Ministry and Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) have suggested fixing the tuition fees of private medical schools.

A subcommittee established by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has recommended that the proposed new fee should be 1,212,468 rupees per year and should remain consistent throughout the academic program to avoid unexpected financial burdens on students.

According to the federal health ministry officials, this recommendation is aimed at controlling the rising tuition fees by private medical schools.

According to PMDC officials, the private medical schools are earning Rs 2.5 million to Rs 3 million annually from the students in lieu of tuition fees.

Private colleges justify fee hikes by citing rising costs, but the committee’s investigation found these increases to be unnecessary and disproportionate to inflation and the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

The final decision in this regard lies with the Committee on Medical Education, which is headed by Deputy PM Ishaq Dar, however, the PM office is still silent on discussing the issue

After the approval, the recommendations will be tabled before the PMDC meeting for formal approval.
