PARIS: Pakistani javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem received gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Friday.
Nadeem beat India’s defending champion Neeraj Chopra and become the first Pakistani to win an individual gold medal at the Paris Olympics after 40 years.
The Pakistan athlete broke a 118-year old Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 metres. Despite a missed first throw, Arshad Nadeem progressively improved. He flung the javelin 88.72m, 79.40m, 84.87m and 91.79m.
Pakistan’s national anthem was played during the gold medal ceremony as Arshad Nadeem received his javelin throw gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters claimed the bronze medal, while India’s Neeraj Chopra took the silver after finishing second in the event.
After the ceremony, Nadeem posed for a selfie with Chopra and Peters, capturing a moment of camaraderie among the top athletes.
Arshad Nadeem etched his name in the history books at the Paris Olympics yesterday, setting a new Olympic record with a jaw-dropping 92.97m throw in the second round of the javelin final. The remarkable throw was more than enough to secure the gold, as no other competitor came close.
Nadeem’s record-breaking performance shattered the previous mark set by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen at the 2008 Beijing Games.
India’s defending gold medalist, Neeraj Chopra, delivered a strong performance to claim silver with his season-best throw of 89.45m, earning him a spot on the podium once again.
Nadeem’s victory not only brought Pakistan its first Olympic gold in 40 years but also ended the country’s long medal drought in any sport. Pakistan’s last gold medals were won in hockey, with the most recent at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
The last time Pakistan secured any medal at the Olympics was 32 years ago, when the national hockey team earned bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Games by edging out the Netherlands 4-3.
