Aseefa Bhutto elected unopposed MNA from Nawabshah

ISLAMABAD: Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, the youngest scion of the Bhutto family, was elected unopposed as a member of the National Assembly from NA-207 constituency, Nawabsha.

Aseefa Bhutto had submitted her nomination papers to contest by-election on a seat vacated by her father Asif Ali Zardari after he was elected the president of Pakistan.

She had been nominated by the Pakistan People’s Party to contest the by-election on the NA-207, however, no candidate submitted nomination papers against her.

After being elected as member of the National Assembly, she said that it was an honor for her to be elected to the coveted seat. “I pledge to serve the people beyond political affiliations,” she said.

Aseefa’s foray into electoral politics marks a significant moment as she formally enters the political arena.

Born on February 3, 1993, in London, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari inherits a legacy deeply entrenched in Pakistani politics. Known for her advocacy in public health, Aseefa emerged as a rising political figure within the Bhutto family.

Her early years were notably characterized by her pivotal role as the first child in Pakistan to receive the polio vaccine, emblematic of her family’s commitment to healthcare initiatives.

Educationally, Aseefa holds a bachelor’s degree in politics and sociology from Oxford Brookes University, alongside a master’s degree in global health and development from University College London.

Aseefa’s dedication to public service was further underscored when she was appointed as Pakistan’s goodwill ambassador for polio eradication in 2012. Her relentless efforts in combating the disease earned her widespread recognition and positioned her as a prominent figure in the nation’s healthcare landscape.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Sindh chapter has alleged that its candidate for by-election in the NA-207 constituency. Ghulam Mustafa Rind. was arrested by the police to pave the way for Aseefa Bhuuto to claim victory.

The PTI said that Rind was initially denied the opportunity to submit his nomination papers but later allowed him to contest. However, he was arrested by the police on Friday.

The PTI strongly condemned this action, stating that the police are targeting their candidate vindictively.

“The party stands united with its candidate, and any unjust actions against their hopeful will be met with strong protest, the PTI said.

Meanwhile, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar said that the PTI cndidate from NA-207 Nawabshah was not arrested by the Sindh police.

“Falsehood, hypocrisy, and propaganda are the legacy of these people. Mere accusations and slander for fame and support should be avoided. Respect for democracy is part of the ideology of the Pakistan People’s Party. If you want to contest elections, then come into the field, hypocritical and divisive politics is a stain on the beauty of democracy,” he said.
