Bilawal Bhutto calls for politics free from personal enmities

LAHORE: The 50th Golden Jubilee Ceremony of the Constitution unfolded today in Lahore, organised by the People’s Lawyers Forum Central Punjab. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto attended the event and delivered a speech at the Dr. Javed Iqbal Auditorium in Lahore High Court (LHC).

Bilawal Bhutto touched upon various aspects of Pakistan’s political history, emphasising the need for unity and a correction in the course of politics. He asserted, “By working hard with fewer resources, we Pakistanis have proved that we are not less than anyone. It was Pakistan that led the whole Muslim Ummah, and it is Pakistan that highlighted their importance.”

He mentioned the ongoing crisis in Gaza, “Today, we see how Palestinians are being oppressed.” He also revisited the historical narrative, attributing the assassination of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto to Zia-ul-Haq, and pointed fingers at lawyers, judges, and bureaucrats for facilitating the tragic event. He stated, “Zulfiqar Bhutto made Pakistan an atomic power. Those who participated in the OIC’s [Organisation of Islamic Countries] decision were martyred.”

Addressing the current state of politics in Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto expressed concern over the resurgence of hatred and revenge in the political arena. He blamed the former premier Imran Khan for bringing back this divisive atmosphere, stating, “Credit goes to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder chairman for what he brought back.”

Bilawal urged for a shift away from personal enmities in politics, emphasising, “Playing politics by abusing each other is not a success; it is a failure. We have turned politics into personal enmity.”

The PPP chairman called for unity among political circles and emphasised the importance of keeping political differences within the realm of politics. He stated, “If politicians work in their legitimate limits, they can bring the rest of the institutions back into their boundaries too.”

Commenting on the ongoing legal proceedings, Bilawal Bhutto expressed hope that justice would be served, stating, “It is hoped that the leader of the people Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto will get justice from the Supreme Court.” He acknowledged the prolonged nature of the legal process, noting, “Hearings are going on the reference that was submitted 12 years ago.”

Closing his address, Bilawal Bhutto called for an end to traditional politics and the politics of hatred. He urged for a collective effort towards the development of the country and stressed the need to correct the trajectory of politics in Pakistan.
