WEB DESK: Provincial Minister for Sindh Saeed Ghani warned that the construction of new canal project on Sindh’s waters pose a high risk to the province’s access to clean drinking water as it already struggles with it.
Talking to media, Ghani said that the planning around the canal began during the interim government and should be considered as such. Pointing out the water scarcity in Sindh, he said due to the issue irrigation in Sindh has become very tough, and the struggle is for the farmers. He added that PPP had defended the rights of farmers in ‘every’ era.
Tarar urged not to politicise canal dispute
“We want to talk about canals, but they are trying to divert the discussion toward wheat. If a minister seems more concerned about wheat than canals, what can we say. Do not mix the issues of wheat and canals; the PML-N wants to divert attention,” Ghani said.
Speaking about Punjab he said that the province only has eight percent of cultivable ground water, while in Sindh 90 percent of the water is saline and not appropriate for cultivation: “Neither could approval for the canal be taken from the President, nor did they have the authority.”
