RAWALPINDI: The price of chicken meat in Rawalpindi has witnessed an alarming surge, surpassing the officially mandated rates set by the government. Shopkeepers have disregarded the prescribed price of Rs 324 per kg, opting instead to sell live chickens at Rs 350 and chicken meat at an exorbitant Rs 500 or more on Sunday.
This sharp increase occurs against the backdrop of a broader inflation crisis gripping Pakistan. While the Statistical Institute reports an annual inflation rate of 42 per cent, many citizens contend that the actual figure is much higher, possibly ranging between 50-60 per cent.
The escalating inflation is wreaking havoc on the affordability of basic necessities, particularly food items. The recent decision by the Market Committee Lahore to raise the prices of 10 vegetables has added to the financial strain on already struggling households.
The soaring price of chicken, a fundamental protein source for many Pakistanis, is proving to be a severe blow. Consumers find themselves caught in a dilemma, forced to choose between sacrificing essential dietary needs or cutting back on other vital expenses.
