Karachi: The looming water crisis for the past 25 days has worsened in the metropolitan city of Karachi, prompting the citizens to close the Sakhi Hassan hydrant in protest.
According to a spokesperson for the Water Corporation, there was a power breakdown at Gharo pumping station on Saturday morning, due to which 30 million gallons of water could not be supplied to the city.
The spokesperson said that water supply has been affected in areas of Bin Qasim, Port Qasim Town, Shah Faisal Town, PNC Mehran and PAF Base Faisal.
Meanwhile, power outages at the Nipa pumping station and NEK pumping station has also caused severe water shortages in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and adjacent areas.
The worst hit areas affected by the water shortage include Korangi, Landhi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Jamshed Road, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Dastgir, FB Area and Baldia Town. Residents of these areas have been forced to buy water tankers at exorbitant prices.

Residents say that the staff and officers of the Water Board are selling hundreds of tankers at arbitrary prices every day, while water is not being supplied to residential areas.
Fed up with the intense heat and water shortage, residents of the Central District blocked roads in protest at the Sakhi Hassan hydrants. The protesters held placards in their hands with slogans written on them: “Give us water”.
Residents said that “water is not coming to our houses, while water is being supplied from hydrants”. The hydrant remained closed for several hours, which also suspended water supply there.
The negligence of the Water Board Department and frequent power outages have put the citizens of Karachi in severe difficulties. The citizens have demanded immediate action from the government.
