Climber Murad Sadpara in need of urgent rescue after Broad Peak accident

Broad Peak

GILGIT: Renowned Pakistani mountaineer Murad Sadpara met with an accident on world’s 12th highest mountain Broad Peak (8051m) early on Sunday, sparking calls for an urgent rescue operation from the mountaineering community.

Sadpara was part of a team of Pakistani climbers that recently recovered the body of Muhammad Hassan, a porter who tragically died last year at K2’s bottleneck. Hassan had perished while hundreds of climbers passed over him on their summit attempts, leaving him to die.

Four Pakistani climbers summit the Golden Peak

Ace mountaineer Naila Kiani, in a statement, appealed to the Pakistan Army for assistance. “We’re requesting the Pakistan Army to dispatch four climbers from Skardu to the Broad Peak crampon point to bring Murad back safely,” she said. Kiani also urged the public to pray for Sadpara’s safe return. “Sadly, we’re resorting to social media as no one seems to be listening to us,” she added.

Alpine Club of Pakistan Secretary Karrar Haideri, while speaking to HUM News English, confirmed the incident. He stated that Sadpara was providing supplies to a foreign expedition when he was caught in a rockfall at an altitude of 5,200 meters.

Haideri said possible location of the mountaineer has been identified.

Body of porter Muhammad Hassan airlifted from K2 basecamp

Adventure guide Muhammad Arif Baltistani told HUM News English that four climbers were summoned to the Skardu helipad around 5 am. However, they had to wait for the helicopter, which was only available at 11:40 AM, which is when two climbers, Akbar Sadpara and Dilwar Sadpara, were flown to the Broad Peak base camp.

Arif Baltistani expressed concerns, noting that it might be challenging for just two climbers to successfully carry out the rescue mission.
