LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday took a trial ride on the Urban Electric Train under the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SRT) project.
During the journey from Ali Town to Muslim Town, she monitored the road test of the electric train.
The CM inspected the SRT system and reviewed the onboard facilities. Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar gave her a detailed briefing on the project.
Maryam Nawaz also observed the SRT’s road test drive amid regular city traffic, assessing its performance.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said, “Every day brings new good news for the people of Punjab.” She added that the launch of the SRT will enhance the beauty of Lahore.
SC moved for stay in auctioning of Bahria Town properties
Maryam Nawaz also announced that similar electric train projects are in the pipeline for Gujranwala and Faisalabad.
The modern tram features three linked compartments and can accommodate over 200 passengers. Powered entirely by electricity, it can cover up to 27 kilometres after just a 10-minute charge. While it has the technology for autonomous driving through a digital navigation system, in Pakistan it will be operated manually for safety reasons. The tram comes with steering controls and is built to run alongside regular traffic without major changes to existing infrastructure.
If the pilot run proves successful, the government plans to extend the tram service to other cities, including Faisalabad and Gujranwala, within the current financial year.
