Conjunctivitis cases continue to surge across Punjab

LAHORE: A significant increase in conjunctivitis cases has been reported across various districts of Punjab, causing alarm among public health officials. The Department of Primary Health Punjab has released data indicating a concerning rise in the number of patients suffering from conjunctivitis.
In the latest update, the Department of Primary Health Punjab has confirmed that 1,134 new conjunctivitis patients have been reported across the province. This brings the total number of conjunctivitis cases this year to a staggering 395,929 in 36 districts of Punjab.
Lahore, the capital of Punjab, has been particularly affected by the outbreak. This year alone, 23,633 conjunctivitis patients have been reported in Lahore, according to the Department of Primary Health Punjab. The situation worsened with an additional 236 new cases reported in the city in just 24 hours.

Bahawalpur has witnessed 77,672 cases of conjunctivitis this year, with 34 new patients appearing just yesterday. Meanwhile, in Multan, 113 new cases were reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the total for the year to 16,464.
In Faisalabad, 35 new cases were reported yesterday, contributing to a total of 31,006 cases this year. Rawalpindi has reported a total of 9,182 conjunctivitis cases in 2023, with 63 new cases appearing just yesterday.
Public health officials are working diligently to contain the outbreak and provide necessary medical care to those affected. Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is highly contagious and can spread easily in crowded areas. Preventive measures such as proper hand hygiene and avoiding close contact with infected individuals are being emphasized.
The Department of Primary Health Punjab has urged the public to remain vigilant and follow guidelines to prevent the further spread of conjunctivitis. Healthcare facilities are also being equipped to handle the influx of patients.
