Crackdown launched against overcharging transporters

ISLAMABAD: Motorway police has launched a crackdown against transporters for overcharging fares from the passengers proceeding to their native villages and town across the country on the eve of Eidul-Fitr.

The special campaign was launched under the direction of IG Motorways Salman Chaudhary, spokesperson

Action is being taken against transporters who are charging more from passengers, DIG Shahid Javed said.

He said transporters should obey traffic rules and avoid overloading and overcharging passenger vehicles.

He said to ensure, patrolling officers will remain alert on toll plazas and additional personnel and special squads are present at certain points on the national highway.

Despite that the motorway police have formed teams to control increasing bus fares charged by bus operators, passengers have considered it as a sort of formality which has not been implemented in its true sense.

They have been asking for a reason why the government doesn’t take any action to resolve the matter.

Hundreds of passengers have to wait in long queues for hours before they could actually start their journeys.

On the other hand, the transporters have said that the gradual increase in prices of diesel and petrol, they are left with no other option but to increase fares rates unilaterally. The transporters have put the blame on the authorities of intercity terminals.
