LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday directed authorities to impose a Rs10,000 fine on individuals found wasting water within their homes, as part of a broader push for stricter water conservation measures.
The court issued these orders while hearing a petition related to environmental concerns. It remarked that an urgent, well-rounded policy is needed for water conservation and storage across the province. The hearing was adjourned until April 18.
The court’s directives are expected to impact practices such as washing cars at home, cleaning driveways with running water, and allowing water tanks to overflow—actions that have already come under scrutiny in several upscale housing societies. Areas such as Defence Housing Authority (DHA), Askari 10, and Askari 11 have reportedly begun issuing warnings or penalties to residents seen wasting water. Some housing societies have banned the use of hoses for washing vehicles or garages.
In addition to the fine, the LHC instructed the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) not to approve building plans for houses larger than one kanal. It also barred the approval of maps for new constructions that do not include an in-house water recycling system.
The court further directed the LDA to ensure compliance by conducting inspections after map approvals, adding that oversight is necessary to prevent violations of water conservation measures. It also pointed out the excessive water usage at vehicle service stations and called for tighter controls in that sector.
Moreover, the Faisalabad Development Authority (FDA), Multan Development Authority (MDA), and other municipal bodies have been told to finalise regulations to protect water resources. The LHC appreciated the efforts made by the environment department but stressed the need for more decisive action.
“We must take effective steps to curb water wastage,” the court observed, warning that negligence could lead to severe consequences for future generations.
