Death toll rising as Karachi heatwave intensifies

Karachi heatwave death toll

KARACHI: An intense heatwave gripping Karachi has given rise to death toll, with temperatures rising up to 40 degrees Celsius.

The metropolitan city is enduring high humidity levels accompanied by light clouds, exacerbating the heat due to the lack of sea breezes.

90 BODIES BOUGHT TO EDHI MORGUES

The sweltering conditions in Karachi have led to a significant rise in heatstroke cases and deaths.

According to the Edhi Foundation, 90 bodies were brought to three Edhi morgues in the past 24 hours. The foundation’s spokesperson stated that many individuals were affected by the severe heatwave yesterday and were subsequently taken to hospitals for treatment.

HEALTH DEPT REPORTS 49 CASES OF HEAT STROKE

The Health Department reported that 49 cases of heatstroke were recorded in government hospitals yesterday alone due to the Karachi heatwave giving rise to death toll. Over the past two days, two heatstroke-related deaths have been reported at Civil Hospital, according to the Sindh Health Department. Since June, the total number of heatstroke-related deaths in Karachi has reached 51.

The current temperature recorded in the city is 35 degrees Celsius, but the “feels like” temperature has soared to 46 degrees Celsius due to the high humidity. According to the Meteorological Department, the humidity level in Karachi is 68%, intensifying the heat.

RAIN PREDICTED

While the heatwave remains severe, there is a forecast of rain with thunderstorms in certain areas. Monsoon currents are entering Sindh, which could bring some relief to the region. Additionally, westerly winds are anticipated on Thursday and Friday, possibly influencing the weather patterns. The Met Office has forecast the likely restoration of the sea breeze in the evening, offering a glimmer of hope for the city’s residents.
