Dhabeji breakdown: Water shortage again hits Karachi

Karachi water supply suspended

KARACHI: Water supply to the city has once again been disrupted due to a power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station, according to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).

A KWSC spokesperson said the breakdown occurred at 12:20 am on Tuesday, affecting Line Number Five at two separate points.

Repair work on the damaged pipeline has been initiated and is expected to be completed within the next 36 hours, the spokesperson added.

As a result of the disruption, the city is likely to face a shortfall of 100 million gallons of water.

Earlier this month, water-starved residents of many localities suffered from water shortage for nearly four days due to the disruption of power to a pumping house at the Dhabeji pumping station

The city only receives only around 650 MGD against a daily requirement of 1,250 MGD from the Dhabeji Pumping Station, a total shortfall of over 600 million gallons per day (MGD) in the city.
