MUZAFFARABAD: Following a series of violent protests in the capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Saturday, government officials announced the replacement of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Muzaffarabad Region on Sunday.

Yasin Qureshi, the previous DIG of Muzaffarabad Region, has been reassigned, with Irfan Masood Kashfi taking over the position, as per official sources. The appointment of Kashfi as the new DIG has been formalised through a notification issued by the government.

Additionally, there are plans to replace Muzaffarabad Commissioner Masoodul Rehman, with Adnan Khurshid slated to assume the role.

The protests, organised by the Joint Awami Action Committee, resulted in clashes between demonstrators and police personnel across Muzaffarabad and other cities in the region. Tensions escalated when protestors encountered heavy police presence along routes leading to the planned gathering site at Medina Market. Incidents of stone pelting at police officers were reported in various areas including Tonga Stand, Aziz Chowk, and Shah Sultan, prompting the police to deploy tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The protest actions led to widespread closures of educational institutions, offices, and businesses in Muzaffarabad for the second consecutive day. Roads connecting different cities within AJK and to Pakistan were also affected.

Allegations surfaced that police conducted late-night raids, arresting several youths who were allegedly subjected to harsh treatment. These actions were criticised by committee members who warned of potential escalation in youth unrest.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muzaffarabad Nadeem Janjua confirmed that 28 individuals were arrested for attacking police and causing damage to vehicles during the protests. Janjua reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order, outlining strategies to enforce section 144 and ensure traffic flow.
