5.1 magnitude earthquake rocks Islamabad, northern Pakistan


A magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurred approximately 56 kilometres north-earth of Barkhan, Balochistan, the USGS reported early on Sunday.

ISLAMABAD: Around 2:06 am, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake rocked Islamabad, Rawalpindi and surrounding regions early on Saturday.

Earthquake epicentre, depth

Meanwhile, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake also struck 58 kilometres south-east of Farkhar, Afghanistan around 2:03 am. The earthquake’s epicentre is in the Takhar province, which lies in the Hindu Kush mountain range. The area is geologically active and prone to earthquakes regularly.

The earthquake’s depth has been reported as 114 kilometers, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported it at approximately 122.6 kilometers.

Earthquake in Islamabad, Rawalpindi

Residents in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi reported the earthquake around 2 am, noting buildings shaking.

Earthquake reported in Lahore, Peshawar

The earthquake was also felt in other major cities, including Lahore and Peshawar.

Earthquake reported across northern Pakistan

Tremors were also reported across northern Pakistan in areas such as Balakot, Gujranwala, Khanpur, Swat and Mardan.
