ECP to decide contempt case against Fawad on Aug 24

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday adjourned hearing into a contempt case against former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry till August 24.

ECP asks Fawad to tender written apology for contempt

A five-member bench headed by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja heard the case against former information minister.

Fawad Chaudhry appeared before the bench along with his lawyer Faisal Chaudhry.

During the hearing, Fawad Chaudhry informed the bench he is resubmitting an unconditional written apology after the ECP raised objection over the earlier apology letter.

Upon recieving the letter, CEC announced the case will be decided on the next day of hearing.

Talking to media outside the ECP, Fawad Chaudhry said general elections would be delayed if delimitation of constituencies is carried out.

He said ECP has a huge responsibility in ensuring a timely and transparent election.

Criticizing Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), former PTI leader said hasty legislation introduced in the final days of the government has defaced the constitution.

By not holding elections within the stipulated time after dissolution of Punjab and KP assemblies, Fawad said the outgoing coalition government’s decision has only increased uncertainty regarding the continuity of democracy.
