Eid day two: LWMC launches early morning cleaning drive

LAHORE: On the second day of Eidul Azha, the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) mobilised the sanitation teams in the field early in the morning.

On the first day of Eid [yesterday], more than 34,000 tons of garbage were disposed of in Lahore Division, LWMC CEO Babar Sahib Din told media on Sunday morning. Out of this, 18,000 tons of garbage were collected on time, from Lahore along, he said.

More than 6,800 people from the entire Lahore Division contacted LWMC helpline 1139, he added.

After disposal of garbage, the streets and alleys are being washed with rose water, the LWMC said. The waste management company has established 254 temporary collection points for disposal of garbage, and 34 dumping sites are activated for the same purpose.

Drone cameras continue to monitor those throwing garbage into the canal, CEO Babar said.

The LWMC is also carrying out cleanliness enforcement measures, with cases registered against seven people who threw garbage into the canal on the first day of Eid. “Fines of Rs 30,000 were also imposed,” the CEO said.

Today, on the second day of festivities and sacrifices, more than 24,000 sanitation workers are deployed, in three shifts, in Lahore Division for cleaning operations, the LWMC said.
