ISLAMABAD:

: Pakistani security forces killed eight terrorists during an exchange of rire in the Sararogha area of South Waziristan, a restive region near the Afghan border.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the military, said in a statement that the raid was based on intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the area.

“During the operation, a fierce exchange of fire occurred between soldiers and the terrorists, and as a result of which eight terrorists were killed,” the ISPR said.

It said the slain militants were involved in several acts of terror against security forces and civilians, and that arms, ammunition, and explosives were recovered from them.

A search operation was underway to eliminate any remaining terrorists in the area, the ISPR added.

Two soldiers martyred in blast in North Waziristan: ISPR

Pakistan’s security forces have been battling various militant groups, including the Pakistani Taliban, in the tribal areas along the Afghan border for years.

The military launched a major offensive in 2014 to clear the region of militants, but sporadic attacks still occur.

On Saturday, two soldiers were martyred in a blast in North Waziristan, another tribal district, the ISPR said.
