Electricity tariff hike another blow for inflation-burdened public

electricity prices

ISLAMABAD: Amidst growing economic concerns and soaring inflation rates, Pakistan is bracing itself for yet another potential financial shock. An application has been filed with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for the first-quarter adjustment of the current financial year, raising alarms about the possibility of a significant electricity price increase.

Government-owned Distribution Companies (DISCOs) have officially sought NEPRA’s approval for the recovery of additional expenses incurred during the provision of electricity services.

Sources within NEPRA have indicated that the application includes a request for an increase in the tariff of government DISCOs, proposing an uptick of Rs 1.30 per unit. This proposed increase, if approved, could significantly impact the already strained budgets of households and industries.

The financial implications of this potential tariff hike are staggering. It is estimated that the government DISCOs aim to collect a substantial sum of Rs 6.61 billion as a measure against electricity theft and line losses. Additionally, a colossal Rs 10.24 billion are expected to be generated in support of maintaining and enhancing the electricity system.

The impending decision on this tariff adjustment application has been scheduled for a hearing by NEPRA on November 14.
