EU pledges Rs 350m aid for Pakistan's flood victims

ISLAMABAD: The European Union (EU) has announced emergency assistance worth Rs350 million (€1.05 million) for victims of flash floods in Pakistan that have claimed hundreds of lives, displaced thousands, and left many missing.

In a post on X, the EU said it stood by Pakistan in this difficult time, pledging support for health services, water and sanitation facilities, and cash assistance for affected families through its humanitarian partners.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims and all those affected by this disaster,” the EU statement read, adding that the funding aims to prevent disease outbreaks and provide life-saving relief to vulnerable communities.

The EU said the assistance would be channelled through trusted partner organisations already active in the flood-hit areas.

The announcement came just days after the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the United Nations pledged $3 million and $0.6 million, respectively, for Pakistan’s flood relief efforts.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar received a call from EU High Representative/Vice President Kaja Kallas on Tuesday. She expressed solidarity with the victims and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Pakistan in relief and recovery efforts.

Dar thanked her for the assistance and highlighted Pakistan’s vulnerability as one of the countries hardest hit by climate change. Both sides expressed satisfaction over growing Pakistan-EU cooperation and vowed to strengthen ties, especially in climate action, resilience building, and sustainable recovery.

Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that more than 2.4 million people and 600,000 livestock have been displaced across the province.

At least 41 people have lost their lives, while officials described the ongoing relief efforts as the “largest-ever rescue operation” in Punjab’s history, with 390 relief camps set up for victims.
