LAHORE: Provincial Transport Minister Ibrahim Hasan Murad recently spoke in favour of promoting the use of electric vehicles (EVs) in Punjab, emphasising their potential for a significant reduction in smog and fog in highly polluted cities such as Lahore.

The seminar, centred on two- and three-wheeler electric vehicles, delved into strategies for fostering eco-friendly practices aimed at reducing air pollution and improving the air quality index.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Murad underscored the crucial role of such seminars in cultivating an environment-friendly culture.

He lamented the annual recurrence of smog due to the absence of a long-term policy. Citing a report, he disclosed that the transport sector contributes to 70 percent of environmental pollution.

In line with the directives of the Chief Minister of Punjab, Minister Murad announced a 30-day registration deadline for chingchi rickshaws and the imminent introduction of 35 Green Line buses in the province.

Meanwhile, Transport Secretary Ahmad Javed Qazi revealed that the transport department had inspected over one lakh vehicles in three months, imposing fines worth millions for various violations.

He stressed the necessity of stakeholder cooperation in curbing environmental pollution, urging them to provide written suggestions.

Qazi proposed consultations with stakeholders in manufacturing and automobiles to formulate an effective strategy for promoting electric bikes.

Additionally, he announced plans to mandate fitness certificates for two- and three-wheelers. The seminar facilitated an interactive session with stakeholders, during which Minister Murad assured consideration of proposals and addressed questions.

The minister also personally reviewed EV-technology vehicles, including driving an electric rickshaw.

The Department of Transport delivered a presentation outlining the steps involved in the manufacturing and registration of motorcycles.

The seminar witnessed manufacturers and other participants making various suggestions, reaffirming their commitment to combating environmental pollution, and acknowledging the efforts of the Transport Department.

Moreover, Sialkot observed the first day of a smart lockdown on Friday to curb smog.

Stringent actions were taken against industrial units, brick kilns, vehicle owners, and farmers contributing to air pollution and smog.

According to details, as of April 1, fines totalling Rs11.9 million have been imposed, with 61 cases registered.

Deputy Commissioner Captain (Rtd) Shah Mir Iqbal provided these details regarding the implementation of smart lockdown measures aimed at smog control.

The DC mentioned that, in accordance with Punjab government directives, all educational institutions were closed throughout the four tehsils on the first day of the lockdown.

However, shops, shopping centres, hotels, and restaurants were permitted to open after 3:00 pm.
