Extreme heat wave causes surge in heat stroke cases in Lahore

LAHORE: An unprecedented heat wave has gripped Lahore, leading to a significant rise in heat stroke cases reported in public hospitals across the city. The extreme temperatures have overwhelmed the healthcare system, with a total of 68 patients admitted for heat-related illnesses in the past 24 hours.
PMD forecast ‘extraordinary’ monsoon rains
At Mayo Hospital, 20 patients suffering from heat stroke were reported within a single day. The hospital administration has expressed concern over the increasing number of cases and the strain it is placing on their resources. Similarly, General Hospital has reported 18 patients, Services Hospital 15 patients, and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital 10 patients, all affected by the severe heat.
Children have also been impacted by the sweltering conditions. Jinnah Hospital admitted two children with heat stroke symptoms, while Children’s Hospital reported three cases. The administrations of these hospitals have highlighted the vulnerability of children to extreme heat and have urged parents to take extra precautions.
Medical experts have advised citizens to avoid going outdoors unless absolutely necessary and to take measures to stay cool and hydrated. Dr. Ahmed Khan, a leading physician at Services Hospital, stated, “It is crucial for everyone, especially the elderly and young children, to stay indoors during peak heat hours and drink plenty of fluids to prevent heat-related illnesses.”

The city’s healthcare facilities are on high alert, with additional medical staff and emergency measures in place to handle the influx of heat stroke patients. Authorities are also considering setting up temporary cooling centres to provide relief to those without access to adequate cooling at home.
