Extreme heatwave sweeps Pakistan, 48°C recorded

ISLAMABAD: Most parts of Pakistan are currently in the grip of an intense heatwave, with temperatures recorded several degrees above normal.
The Meteorological Department has warned that the heat is likely to intensify in the coming days, increasing the risk of a severe heatwave in Pakistan.
In upper and plain areas, temperatures are expected to remain 5 to 7°C above average.
On Thursday, Dadu in Sindh and Turbat in Balochistan recorded a scorching 48°C — the highest temperature of the year so far. Dera Ghazi Khan hit 47°C, while Bhakkar, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, and Nokundi each saw temperatures touch 46°C.
PMD issues heatwave alert for May 2025
Punjab is also experiencing blistering heat. In Lahore, the mercury is forecast to hit a maximum of 43°C. No rain is expected in the next two to three days, as per the Met Office.
Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert, warning that temperatures until May 19 could pose a serious risk to public health.
Experts have advised people to avoid going outdoors during peak heat hours, keep their heads covered, and increase their intake of water and fluids to stay hydrated.
The Met Office has said the heatwave is likely to persist across most parts of the country until May 20. The public is urged to take precautionary measures to avoid health complications.
