Renowned lawyer Khawaja Shams ul Islam shot dead at a funeral in Karachi

KARACHI: A funeral prayer was being held after the Friday prayers in Karachi, when an unknown gunman opened fire, killing renowned lawyer Khawaja Shams ul Islam and injuring his son, police officials said.

The police have also recorded statements of the people present at the scene. According to eye witnesses, a man was seen firing a gun and fleeing the scene, while shouting that he had avenged his father.

Police sources said that it is possible that the incident was targeted over personal enmity, adding that the incident is being investigated.

As per details, the incident took place at the funeral of famous businessman Muzammil Paracha. The shooter opened fire inside the mosque.

Two people were shot, including a representative of the Sindh High Court (SHC), SHC Bar Association, and Supreme Court, Khawaja Shamsul Islam and his son. The SHC lawyer was pronounced dead upon reaching the hospital while his son is currently under treatment, member of the traders community Zafar Paracha told media.

Shamsul Islam had been representing various criminal cases. He had also been arrested for registering a case for overspeeding and arguing with the police on Karachi Sea View. Police sources also confirmed his death after the firing incident.
