Fares hike following petroleum price surge

LAHORE:  In the wake of a substantial overnight surge in petroleum prices enacted by the interim government, rates for both intercity and intracity transportation have undergone an upward adjustment of 20 to 30 percent.

For instance, the fare for a journey from Lahore to Mansehra has experienced an increase from Rs 2400 to Rs 2800, while the fare for a trip from Lahore to Dera Ismail Khan has seen an escalation from Rs 2500 to Rs 2900.

This adjustment in fares encompasses both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned buses. Transport operators have attributed these changes to the escalating costs of petroleum products, which have compelled them to revise their fare structures.

The announcement has evoked apprehension within the general populace, as the prospect of intercity commutes becoming financially burdensome for a significant majority looms. The federal government’s decision to raise petroleum product prices by Rs 17.50 per litre has led to the revised cost of Rs 290.45 per litre.

Furthermore, there has been a corresponding Rs 20 increase per litre in the price of high-speed diesel, placing its new price at Rs 293.40 per litre.
