Fatal lightning strikes Balochistan amid heavy rain forecast

QUETTA: Tragedy struck in Balochistan as two children lost their lives due to lightning strikes, and one person sustained injuries, following heavy rainfall predicted by the meteorological department.

According to Radio Pakistan, rain has been expected in several areas including Quetta, Pasni, Muslim Bagh, and Ziarat. Moderate rainfall is anticipated in Zhob, Sherani, Barkhan, Musakhel, Kohlu, Sibi, and Jhal Magsi.

Thunderstorms accompanied by rain have been forecasted in Chaman, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, Loralai, and Qalat. Turbat, Hernai, Nasirabad, Jaffarabad, Chagai, Panjgur, Gwadar, and Kech may also experience rainfall.

Today, heavy rain in Quetta led to flooding in low-lying areas while mudslides caused damage in Qalat, impacting the region. Jahanzeb Khan, Director-General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), provided updates confirming the fatalities in the Sorab district due to lightning strikes.

He highlighted that most areas of the province remained dry except for Chaman, Chagai, Nushki, Sorab, Khuzdar, Quetta, and Girdunwah, where rain occurred.

The PDMA emphasized precautionary measures, advising citizens to stay clear of electrical poles and equipment during rain, especially focusing on the safety of children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. Unnecessary travel during inclement weather conditions is strongly discouraged.

Furthermore, the PDMA recommended avoiding approaching deep waters and dams, seeking shelter in secure locations during car travel, and ensuring safety protocols for livestock. In emergencies, individuals can reach out to the Deputy Commissioner’s office, District Live Control Room, or the PDMA Control Room for assistance.
