Fear of atta shortage looms large

atta shortage

LAHORE: Due to the strike of All-Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA) for the past three days against the newly imposed withholding tax, there is a fear of potential shortage of flour/atta .

Owners of atta chakkis (small wheat grinding units) and flour dealers in various towns have also joined the strike, leading to significant disruptions in flour supply across many urban centres. PFMA Chairman Asim Raza has vowed to continue the strike until the association’s demands are met.

The ongoing strike by flour mills has also exacerbated the difficulties faced by the Naan Roti Association, leading to a shortage of flour/atta at tandoors across Lahore.

The United Naan Roti Association stated that the supply of flour and fine atta  to tandoors has been halted for the past three days. They warned that if the strike is not called off, they might be forced to shut down tandoors.

BAN IMPOSED ON WHEAT EXPORTS

Meanwhile in response to the artificial increase in wheat and flour prices and to prevent shortages, the government has taken important steps by imposing an immediate ban on wheat imports and flour exports.

The Ministry of Commerce has issued an official notification regarding these measures.

According to the notification, the ban on wheat imports and flour exports takes effect immediately. Officials have explained that these decisions were made to curb the artificial inflation of wheat and flour prices and to ensure sufficient supply within the country.

By restricting wheat imports, the government aims to stabilize local markets and support domestic producers. Simultaneously, the ban on flour exports is intended to prevent shortages and maintain adequate stock levels for local consumers.

This decisive move underscores the government’s commitment to addressing price manipulation and ensuring the availability of essential commodities for the population.
