Federal govt greenlights Balochistan development package

The Balochistan Chief Minister, Sarfaraz Bugti, is set to arrive in Multan for a brief visit on Thursday following Panjgur attack.

WEB DESK: Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti announced that funds have been allocated for the second phase of the Kachhi Canal project, which has been a 25-year old demand by the people of Balochistan. The federal government revealed a comprehensive development package for the province on Wednesday, including long-awaited infrastructure projects and economic relief measures, dubbed as a “transformative step” for the province. “This will irrigate 800,000 acres of barren land, revolutionising agriculture in the region,” said CM Bugti.

Federal Minister of Commerce Jam Kamal appreciated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s efforts and focus on Balochistan’s development. Federal Minister for Science and Technology Khalid Hussain Magsi termed the Kachhi Canal a “game-changer” and credited CM Bugti’s leadership for persuading Sardar Akhtar Mengal to end his protest.

He added that the Karachi-Chaman Highway, notoriously known as the “Bloody Road” due to its high accident rate, will also undergo major upgrades. “This highway is critical for regional connectivity, and its improvement will save lives and livelihood.” The CM welcomed the reduction in petroleum prices, calling it a “positive step” for the people of Balochistan. He also announced that border districts would be prioritised in the upcoming budget to combat smuggling and stimulate trade.

While the government hailed the initiatives as a leap toward equitable development, the question about its timing and implementation remains critical. However, officials remain confident, with CM Bugti stating, “This is a collective effort — every Pakistani has a stake in Balochistan’s prosperity.”
