WEB DESK: Declaring the customs and traditions un-Islamic, the Federal Shariat Court has issued a verdict pertaining to women who are deprived of their inheritance.
The court ruled that customs and traditions cannot be used as a basis to deny women their rightful inheritance, and directed criminal action against those who usurp inheritance of women.
Pakistani women: Overlooked and undervalued
The court was informed that in Bannu, traditions such as “Chadar” and “Parchi” are practiced to deny women inheritance, while the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government maintained that such customs are neither prevalent nor hold any legal significance.
It was told that women were deprived of inheritance during the pre-Islamic era of ignorance, a practice Islam abolished.
