KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Thursday granted bail to renowned filmmaker and writer Jamshed Mehmood, popularly known as Jami, while hearing his appeal against his recent conviction.

The court also suspended his two-year sentence until further proceedings and directed him to submit surety bonds worth Rs50,000 for his release from prison the same day.

Jami’s lawyer, Advocate Hafiz Muhammad, called the decision a major relief for his client.

Earlier, a local sessions court had sentenced Jami to two years in prison and imposed a fine in a case filed directly by filmmaker and music director Sohail Javed.

In his appeal, Jami argued that the allegations were baseless and the offence was bailable. He also claimed the trial court had failed to follow due legal procedure and requested that the conviction be overturned.

The court has adjourned the hearing, with further proceedings to be held on the next scheduled date.
