Widespread fog forces major motorway closures

NHMP issues latest update on motorways

ISLAMABAD: In the initial week of 2024, dense fog has persisted, eliciting concerns among travellers across the country.

On Thursday, January 4, at 3:00 AM, fog continued to envelop various regions, prompting the closure of key motorways.

The Motorway M1, spanning from Islamabad to Peshawar, was shut down due to limited visibility caused by the prevalent fog.

Similarly, the Motorway M2, connecting Islamabad to Lillah interchange, and the Motorway M4, extending from Halka to Kharpa Interchange, were also closed to traffic as a precautionary measure.

In addition to these closures, disruptions were reported on the Swat Motorway, with closures from Katlang to Chakdara Toll Plaza and Colonel Sher Khan Interchange to Babuzai.

A spokesperson emphasised the necessity of these closures, emphasising the safety concerns associated with the challenging weather conditions.

Furthermore, the Motorway M5 experienced closure from Iqbalabad Interchange to Rohri, further impacting the regional transportation network.

Authorities urge travellers to exercise caution, stay informed through official channels, and consider alternative routes when possible.

The sustained grip of fog in various parts of the country underscores the importance of vigilance and adherence to safety protocols during adverse weather conditions.
