Former diplomat Najmuddin A. Shaikh passes away

ISLAMABAD: Veteran diplomat and former Foreign Secretary Najmuddin A. Shaikh, has passed away at the age of 85. Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan confirmed the news.

Shaikh served as Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary from 1994 to 1997. He was an alumnus of Sindh University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, USA.

During his four-decade-long diplomatic career, he represented Pakistan as an ambassador in Germany, Canada, the United States, and Iran. He was a strong advocate for international cooperation, regional stability, and human rights.

Shaikh was a member of the Board of Governors at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad and one of the founding members of the Sindh Council of Foreign Relations.

Paying tribute, the Foreign Office spokesperson said, “As Foreign Secretary, he demonstrated exceptional leadership and played a strategic role in shaping Pakistan’s foreign policy. His contributions were highly respected both nationally and internationally.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, the spokesperson said.
