Former JI Senator Prof Khurshid Ahmad passes away

WEB DESK: Former Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) senator and economist Professor Khurshid Ahmad passed away in the UK on Sunday. The JI leader who received Nishan-e-Imtiaz in 2010 among other titles, was 93 and would be laid to rest in Leicester.

Prof Ahmad was known to be the last surviving companions of Maulana Abul Ala Maududi who founded JI.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other dignitaries remembered his services in the development of Islamic economics and mourned his passing.

According to Dawn, Prof Ahmad was an active part of the Muslim community in Leicester and served as a chairman of Markfield Institute of Higher Education. He was also a former minister for commerce and planning in 1978 and laid the foundation of Institute of Policy Studies in Islamabad.

“A visionary Islamic economist, scholar, and thought leader, Professor Khurshid Ahmad dedicated his life to intellectual excellence, policy development, and the service of knowledge rooted in Islamic values. His contributions to education, economics, and public discourse have left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations,” the JI spokesperson stated.

As per Geo.tv, Prof Ahmad was born in New Delhi in 1932 and received a double major degree in Economics and Islamic Studies with distinction. He was part of the Senate in 1985, 1997, and 2002. He also wrote 70 books in English and Urdu and was also the editor of the party’s monthly edition ‘Tarjamanul Quraan’.
