Govt in talks with allies, army chief to reduce electricity prices: PM Shehbaz

ISLAMABAD (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Thursday that the government is actively working to tackle the country’s economic challenges, particularly the burden of high electricity costs.
Addressing a the Ulema-Mashaikh conference in Islamabad, the prime minister said that the government had allocated Rs50 billion to support power consumers in the protected category using up to 200 units. However, he acknowledged that those consuming 200-500 units were still struggling with high costs. To address this, he assured that discussions are ongoing between the coalition government and the army chief to develop a comprehensive plan aimed at easing the financial strain on electricity consumers, with provincial governments expected to announce their plans soon.

Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasised the unprecedented cooperation between the coalition government and national institutions, including the military, in addressing the country’s challenges. He praised the efforts and support of Chief of Army Staff Gen Syed Asim Munir, describing their collaboration as a model for future governance.
The prime minister also called for unity and national harmony, stressing the importance of learning from past mistakes to build the Pakistan envisioned by its founders. As the nation approaches its 77th Independence Day, he urged renewed dedication to national goals, guided by the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.
Shehbaz Sharif also condemned the anti-Pakistan activities of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and criticised the misuse of social media for spreading misinformation and propaganda. He highlighted the sacrifices of army soldiers who have protected the nation, lamenting the disrespect shown to them online.
Referring to the May 9 attacks as one of the most distressing events in the country’s history, the prime minister drew parallels with the tragic events of 1971, implying that those responsible for recent unrest would face consequences. He called on religious leaders to help bridge societal divisions and promote the Islamic economic system, asserting that a united and determined nation could overcome any obstacle.
Lastly, the prime minister acknowledged the necessity of the IMF programme for achieving economic stability, creating productive employment, and implementing reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and the power sector.
