ISLAMABAD: To counter the increasing loss of demand from the grid electricity, the federal government has decided to further decrease the per unit price of solar powered electricity, bringing it to the range of Rs 7.5 to Rs 11 per unit.

The current per unit price of per unit of solar net metered electricity is Rs 21 per unit. The decision to reevaluate prices come on the heels of the decline in the price of solar panels. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also raised the concerns over the grid charges becoming increasingly burdensome for those who cannot afford to have solar panels.
To bridge this divide, and to ensure sustainable demand for grid electricity, the government has been planning to reduce the rate of excess electricity produced by those who have access to the solar powered energy.

If this proposal is approved, the rooftop solar customers will receive considerably lower compensation for the electricity transmitted back to the grid. It will also discourage more users to move towards solar panels, and may also ease the burden of capacity payments.
