Govt outlines power sector reforms aimed at reducing electricity prices

The federal government announced a substantial decrease in the buyback rate for solar net metering electricity producers.

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division) Sardar Awais Leghari stated that significant reductions in electricity prices have taken place recently, attributing this achievement to comprehensive reforms in the power sector. “We have taken multiple measures to reduce electricity prices for consumers,” stated Leghari during a press briefing.

Key Reforms and Achievements

The minister highlighted that stable policy interventions have successfully lowered power tariffs. Among the major steps taken was the renegotiation of contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to address inefficiencies in the system.

Renewable Energy Transition Accelerates

Leghari noted a surge in solar panel adoption across Pakistan, declaring that “an energy revolution through alternative sources has already begun.” This shift aligns with reduced electricity demand over the past two to three years, partly due to improved energy conservation and efficiency measures.

Sectoral Reforms and Consumer Relief

Substantial reforms implemented over the past year have transformed the power sector, including a 30percent reduction in industrial tariffs to boost manufacturing competitiveness. “The government remains committed to providing relief to consumers and ensuring sustainable tariff reductions,” Leghari emphasized.

Future Roadmap

The energy minister reaffirmed plans for further tariff rationalisation, stressing that affordability and sectoral sustainability remain top priorities for the administration. These measures aim to create long-term stability in Pakistan’s energy market while promoting renewable energy solutions.
