LAHORE: As a permanent solution to smog and air pollution, Punjab is planning to convert hundreds of acres of land into forests as natural air filters.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched a campaign to grow natural forest on 978 acres in Lahore. Reportedly, work has already begun on building the natural air filter forests on the banks of the Ravi River to make Lahore an oxygen hub. The provincial government said that 105,000 trees have already been planted on 144 acres to provide oxygen to the people of Lahore, and more plantations are underway.

Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the mission is to freshen up Lahore’s air, for which a target of planting 634,000 trees has been set. She said that this is Punjab government’s historic war against smog. A green wall will be built on 978 acres, she said, adding that “making Lahore green and free from environmental pollution is Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s top priority.”

Aurangzeb added, “This is a permanent and big step of the Punjab government for environmental protection, speeding up the construction of a green Lahore. Every citizen should plant a tree! Everyone’s role is important in the mission to make Lahore smog-free.”

She commended the initiative by the Forest Department and the Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA). She said that the provincial government will further expand the scope of tree plantation in Lahore and beyond.

“A vast green belt on the banks of the Ravi River will ensure the supply of clean air. Every plant will offer a new life. Natural forest on 978 acres will prove to be a milestone for the future of Lahore,” Aurangzeb said.
