KHYBER: A hand grenade attack targeted the residence of Village Council Chairman Engineer Arif Afridi, in Shlobar in District Khyber. The incident, which occurred within the jurisdiction of Bara Police Station, has raised concerns about security and potential links to extortion threats. According to District Police Officer (DPO) Salim Abbas, Engineer Arif Afridi had been receiving extortion calls for the past three months, suggesting a possible motive behind the attack. The incident unfolded late at night, the witnesses reported.

Thankfully, reports indicate that the residents of the house were unharmed from the hand grenade attack. However, two individuals, believed to be the assailants, sustained injuries due to the hand grenade explosion. They were promptly transported to a medical facility in Peshawar for treatment, as confirmed by the local law enforcement.

 In a startling revelation, Engineer Arif Afridi has alleged the involvement of a police official in the attack, adding that one of the injured attackers may be a member of the police force. The District Police Office has initiated a comprehensive investigation into these claims, with DPO Salim Abbas stating, “Investigation is ongoing,” and assuring that the potential role of the injured police officer in the incident is also under scrutiny.

UPDATE:

The District Police Officer (DPO) Khyber, in a press release, has stated that an investigation team led by the Superintendent of Police (SP) Investigation Khyber has been established to look into the matter.

Meanwhile, two police officers have been taken into custody as suspects.
