Karachi weather update: heavy rainfall leads to electricity outage, flights suspended


Heavy rain lashes Karachi

KARACHI: Heavy rainfall on Saturday evening led to various low-lying areas of Karachi to be submerged, while power outages are common.

Rainfall has been reported in areas including Rashid Minhas Road, and Gulistan-e-Johar.

Additionally, rain has poured over Karachi and Bahadurabad.

Various areas of Karachi, including Gulshan-e-Maymar and Surjani Town, have experienced rainfall as well.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PWD) reported rainfall figures across different areas of Karachi.

Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Base Faisal and Shahrah-e-Faisal recorded the highest rainfall at 75 millimetre (mm), followed by Malir Halt with 64 mm, Surjani Town with 63.8 mm, and Keamari Town with 55 mm.

Gulshan-e-Hadeed received 50 mm, Saadi Town recorded 52 mm, and Airport Old Area measured 51 mm of rainfall. PAF Base Masroor reported 47.2 mm, Jinnah Terminal 42 mm, while Nazimabad and North Karachi each experienced 33.6 mm of rainfall.

The PWD also released figures for other areas. University Road received 30 mm, Gulshan-e-Maymar received 23.8 mm, and Korangi got 15 mm of rainfall.

The meteorological department said that almost 90 per cent of Karachi experienced rain along with thunder and lightning.

Several power-supply lines were disrupted, leading to loss of electricity for residents. The weather also led to suspension of flights into the city.

According to rescue authorities, a person lost their life due to electrocution in the Lines Area of Karachi.
