Heavy rain plunges Karachi into darkness

karachi plunges into darkness as over 200 feeders trip

KARACHI: Heavy rain in the city on Tuesday caused more than 200 feeders of K-Electric to trip, plunging several areas of Karachi into darkness.

Power outages were reported in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Lines Area, Manghopir, North Karachi, Five-C Four, Golimar, Pak Colony, Waheedabad, Jehangirabad, Surjani, and parts of New Karachi. Electricity supply was also suspended in Keamari, Mauripur, SITE Area, and Numaish Chowrangi.

According to a K-Electric spokesperson, electricity in low-lying areas may be temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure due to water accumulation.

Field teams are present on the ground to assess the situation.

Karachi receives early morning rain, more showers predicted across country

The spokesperson urged citizens to exercise caution while using electrical appliances during rain. He added that uninterrupted power supply is being provided from more than 1,750 out of 2,100 feeders, while monitoring of the system continues.

The chief secretary also ordered K-Electric, HESCO, and SEPCO to ensure uninterrupted power supply, while district administrations were asked to maintain close coordination with the Meteorological Department and PDMA.

ROADS SUBMERGED, HOMES FLOODED

Heavy rainfall submerged both sides of Golimar road, causing severe traffic congestion. Large pools of water also appeared around Nazimabad Chowrangi, creating difficulties for commuters.

Vehicles and motorcycles broke down in several areas, forcing citizens to push them through flooded streets. In North Nazimabad Block F, rainwater entered homes, leaving residents distressed.

According to locals, the stormwater drain from KDA Chowrangi to Ziauddin Hospital overflowed, flooding low-lying streets and pushing water into houses.

Residents urged the city administration to take immediate steps for drainage to prevent further problems.

RAINS TO CONTINUE

Weather experts said a monsoon system is active over the Arabian Sea, which will continue to bring intermittent rain to Karachi today. The city experienced heavy showers earlier, causing a drop in temperature, while moderate rainfall is expected tomorrow.

Experts urged citizens to stay indoors during severe thunderstorms and use mobile phones only for emergency calls. They also advised people on roads to avoid trees, fences, and electric poles, warning that lightning strikes directly affect exposed objects.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah directed authorities to remain on high alert in view of the rains, especially in Karachi. He instructed all deputy commissioners to stay in the field with their staff and ensure timely drainage of rainwater.
