Heavy rainfall: Water level at Nullah Lai reaches 20 feet

ISLAMABAD: Continuous heavy rainfall since last night has disrupted daily life in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, several low lying areas have submerged, and emergency alert has been issued at Nullah Lai.

Low-lying areas in Rawalpindi have been submerged, and sirens were sounded near Nullah Lai as the water level has reached 20 feet. The Meteorological Department has predicted more rain in the next three hours.

According to the Flood Control Room, water levels have dangerously risen in areas including Lalazar, Gawalmandi, Shamsabad, Chaklala, Pirwadhai, and Katarian.

In Gawalmandi, water has reached 14 feet, just below the alert level of 14.1 feet. Officials fear further rise if rainfall continues.

Islamabad also witnessed intense downpours, with water accumulating on Ahmed Faraz Road in Sector F-11. Rainfall recorded in Golra and Sector E-11 was 132 mm, Bokra 155 mm, and H-8 113 mm. In Saidpur Village, 100 mm was recorded, while in Rawalpindi, Chaklala received 175 mm, Pirwadhai 131 mm, and Gawalmandi 135 mm.

The heavy rain has damaged several roads in Rawalpindi and disrupted traffic. Waterlogged roads near Gangal on Islamabad Expressway caused long traffic jams.

Rescue 1122, WASA, Civil Defence, and other emergency departments have been placed on high alert. According to a WASA spokesperson, teams have been mobilised for drainage efforts, and continuous monitoring of Nullah Lai is underway.

Citizens have been advised to stay indoors and avoid low-lying areas. District administrations have activated emergency control rooms and are closely monitoring the situation.
