Heavy rains, storms trigger accidents across Punjab: 12 dead, 39 injured

LAHORE: The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has reported multiple accidents due to heavy rains and strong winds across the province, resulting in casualties and infrastructure damage.

According to a PDMA spokesperson, 25 rain-related incidents, including collapsed roofs and walls, were reported in Lahore alone. The severe weather has claimed 12 lives and left 39 injured so far.

The affected areas extend beyond Lahore, with Bahawalnagar, Faisalabad, and Khanewal also reporting storm-related accidents.

The PDMA has warned that the current monsoon spell is expected to continue until July 1, urging residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during the downpour.

Rain emergency imposed in Rawalpindi

Authorities are coordinating relief efforts, and emergency response teams have been deployed to assist affected communities.

On June 27, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has imposed a rain emergency in Rawalpindi and raised its alert status amid ongoing heavy rainfall across the twin cities.

The decision followed a forecast from the Meteorological Department predicting continuous and significant precipitation throughout the day.

According to WASA, both cities recorded over 35mm of rainfall, with specific readings as follows: Saidpur 31mm, Golra 23mm, Bokra 35mm, and Pirwadhai 33mm.

Heavy rainfall lashes Punjab: PDMA issues high alert

In view of the rain emergency in Rawalpindi, heavy machinery and staff have been deployed in low-lying areas, while special attention is being paid to Committee Chowk underpass and Murree Road, where equipment is already stationed.
