GILGIT: A man from Ghizer allegedly shot dead his sister and another man in another episode of honour killing in the Baseen area of Gilgit, police said on Friday.
Speaking to HUM News English, Ghizer Superintendent of Police (SP) Abdul Samad said although the victims were from Ghizer, the killing occurred in Gilgit district.
According to the top police official in the district, the victims were returning to Ghizer after spending two days in Jutial, Gilgit, when the suspect intercepted them in Baseen and opened fire on their car.
SP Samad added that police from both districts, along with the DIG himself, were overseeing the honour killing case. The alleged culprit surrendered to Baseen Police Station after the incident.
WHO WERE THE VICTIMS
Maheen, in her early 20s, was married to an Afghan man settled in the United States and had a two-year-old child. She had allegedly eloped with a man from Ghizer. Her relatives traced and convinced her to proceed with a divorce and remarry according to her wishes.
However, as the couple was leaving the outskirts of Gilgit, one of her brothers killed them.
During investigation, the authorities have arrested another brother and an uncle for aiding in executing the honour killing, while a cousin remains at large.
