ISLAMABAD: The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has withdrawn its civil review petition against the Faizabad dharna case verdict in the Supreme Court (SC) before its hearing.
Director General (DG) IB Fuad Asadullah Khan filed a petition in the SC explaining reasons for withdrawal.
The court has accepted the request for withdrawal of the petition.
Background
On February 6, 2019, the SC issued the judgment in a suo moto matter pertaining to sit-in staged by the Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) in 2017 at Faizabad Interchange. A two-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Qazi Faez Isa announced the verdict.
Soon after, eight review petitions were filed against the Faizabad sit-in case verdict, by various political parties and organisations including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Muttahida Qaumi Movement – Pakistan (MQM-P), Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), intelligence agencies, and the defence ministry.
On September 22, newly sworn-in Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa fixed the review petitions against the Faizabad Dharna case judgment for hearing, something that had not been done during the tenures of the last three chief justices.
