ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday admonished the federal government for its failure to submit a detailed report explaining Pakistan’s refusal to assist in Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s legal proceedings in the United States, warning it may initiate contempt proceedings against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and cabinet members.
During the hearing of a petition filed by Dr Fouzia Siddiqui – seeking her sister’s repatriation, health updates, and release from US imprisonment – Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan expressed frustration over the government’s repeated delays.
“Despite clear directives, no report has been furnished to justify Pakistan’s non-cooperation with the US court,” Justice Khan observed. “Should this persist, I will summon the entire federal cabinet – and contempt notices may extend to the prime minister himself.”

The court had first demanded the report in June. When Additional Attorney General Rashid Hafeez sought a five-day extension on Thursday, citing procedural delays, Justice Khan granted the request but noted wryly that the official would soon proceed on annual leave. The case was adjourned until July 21.
In a related development, Dr Fouzia’s counsel, Advocate Imran Shafiq, submitted an application requesting a meeting between her and the PM. The judge, however, questioned its utility: “Does the prime minister require a meeting to comprehend this matter?”
Dr Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist convicted in 2010 of attempting to kill US personnel in Afghanistan, remains incarcerated in Texas. Her case has long been a flashpoint in Pakistan-US relations, with successive governments facing public pressure to secure her release.
