ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) enforcing a zero-tolerance policy on illegal parking violations in the federal capital has introduced stricter measures that include hefty fines, vehicle impoundment, and mandatory traffic rules classes.

The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) is actively cracking down on traffic law violators in the federal capital. Special checkpoints have been set up to curb violations, according to a statement by the traffic police.

The statement further noted that the crackdown includes action against illegal parking, particularly in no-parking zones and on footpaths.

The violators will now not only have to pay a hefty fine of Rs 3000 and impounding of their vehicles for three days but also take traffic rules classes for three days.

While most commuters have lauded this initiative of the ITP. But some are sceptical of such harsh punishment for illegal parking in Islamabad.

“ I parked my car on the curbside of Ufone office in Blue Area as there was no other parking spot. When I came out I was handed a fine notice and my car was impounded for three days and was told to attend traffic rules class for three days before I can get my vehicle back.”, Faisal an employee with a private firm told Hum News English.

Several commuters were of the view that first proper public parking places be constructed before police hands out such harsh sentences.

“ There are no proper parking spaces for offices in Islamabad especially in Blue Area. We are left with no choice but to park on curbside”, Ayesha another commuter said.

According to the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP), action was taken against over 31,000 motorists for traffic violations during the last 10 days of December 2024.

Additionally, 6,584 vehicles and motorcycles were impounded at various police stations for serious violations.

Special teams carried out operations near shopping malls, markets, commercial centers, and major roads across the capital to enforce traffic rules.
